Tucked away in the village of Senaru in the island’s northern Lombok Utara regency are two of Lombok’s finest and most popular cascades, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep, located at the foot of the majestic Mount Rinjani. The village is located about a 2 ½ hour drive from Mataram, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province.

According to local people, Tiu Kelep name is the taken from Sasak language. “Tiu” means pool, and “Kelep” means fly. While Sendang Gile name is taken from a legend which tells the story of a prince who was chased by a crazy lion. He ran into the woods and hid behind a waterfall. This waterfall was then called Sendang Gile waterfall. The two waterfalls are believed by the local people to cure many diseases and can make you look and feel younger. The local people also believe that the water flow becomes greater if people around are talking loudly.

If you seek an adventurous trek in the woods that will lead to a more satisfying reward, then venture further to these waterfalls. The trip is totally worth it as you come upon the majestic flow of water rushing 45 meters down the cliff before crashing against the rocks at the bottom. Layered water flows, cool air and green scenery are attractions that you can enjoy when you visit Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfall. Lombok Indonesia has magnificent natural mountain charm that combins into a calming rhythm with the shady trees. These two waterfalls form water stairs in a single flow. The blowing mist which fills the surrounding valley will feel so fresh when it touches your skin.

The path which forms the stairs to Sendang Gile is a relatively easy trek. However, you still have to be alert, since there are many small and big stones around Sendang Gile waterfall. If you stand at a higher ground, you will see the crash and flow of the waters. You could also relax by sitting on the stones which face the waterfall. To warm up yourself, you can enjoy a coffee which you can buy in the food stalls nearby the waterfall.

To get to to Tiu Kelep waterfall it takes about 45 minutes on foot. You will pass sloping stairs and shallow rivers with clear and calm flowing water. Its a good hike and your exhaustion will soon disappear once you arrive at the waterfall. Tiu Kelep waterfall is quite high, about 45 m with big and strong crashing water. If you don’t want to get wet, you should wear your waterproof jacket. Nearby the waterfall, you will have an interesting view of big trees which live in the valley.
